If someone were to ask me what food I could not live without, I’d say SUSHI.
There is no other food that makes my taste buds as happy. When it comes to picking a sushi restaurant, I am picky. Let me give you an insiders tip: you can tell if you are about to eat quality sushi by the color of the ginger they give you before you order your food. If the ginger is really pink, most likely, your sushi will not be that good. If the ginger is a light color and not so pink, odds are, the sushi is quality. Don’t ask me why this is so, but it is something I have noticed when I go to different sushi restaurants.
Pay attention to the ginger next time, and let me know what you think!
Let me introduce you to my ultimate favorite sushi restaurant located in Tarzana off Reseda on Ventura Blvd. It is called, Kushiyu and the word amazing doesn’t even do justice. If you go on a weekend night, expect to wait at least 15 minutes because it is always packed. Here is another insiders tip: sit at the sushi bar if you are with a party of three or less. You will not only get seated faster, but your food is made right in front of you and handed to you immediately. Who wouldn’t want that?
When I go, I never look at the menu. I learned through asking people what they order to determine my own menu. So, let me tell you my consistent menu. It goes as this—
1- Green Tea
2- Spicy tuna on rice cakes
3- Albacore sushi with ponzo sause
4- Corn crunch roll
5- Chilean Seabass
6- Green Tea Icecream or Strawberry/ Mango Mochi
Let’s compare, shall we? To name a few big names, I’ve been to Katsuya, Bonzai, Brothers, Izakaya, Kabuki, and Geisha House. Trust me none of those places compare to Kushiyu.
As far as pricing goes, expect to pay $20 a person. Not too expensive compared to Geisha House where you will be given bite size portions for 15$ each. Do you like good service? Let me guess. Yes? Yes! Of course. Kushiyu is on top of their game. Oh, did you drink your drink too fast? No worries, there is someone there already pouring another drink for you. I swear, the service is great!
If you go by the menu I do, there is no way you will walk out unhappy.
Let me give you the background first. So, Friday night I went out to a restaurant in Silverlake called Malo and I have to share this Mexican gem with you all.
Why is Malo so special? Let’s just say you can forget about those regular, boring, hard tortilla chips because without spoiling it for you, Malo has special chips known as chewy chips and it will change your Mexican food taste buds forever. I put a dollar taco down on that!
This is a great date spot and also a fun little bar. The restaurant is seperated into three rooms and thats not even including the upstairs. It is truly a gem.

When you go, here is what I recommend ordering:
1- Start off with a tasty Blood Orange Margarita
2- Chewy Chips with Green Salsa
3- Ground Beef & Pickle Hard-Shell Taco with Cheddar Cheese
4-Lobster Hard Shell Taco
Oh and it doesn’t end there. Monday nights they have 1$ tacos!

On a DANK scale of 1-10, 10 being amazing, Malo rates an 8.
dineLA- ends this friday the 5th. For those of you who do not know what this is, check out this site:
http://discoverlosangeles.com/play/dining/restaurantweek/aapart2010.html Participating in dineLa will give you the biggest bang for your buck. Yeah so money is a bit tight but when will you ever be able to stuff your face with a three course meal below $44. Let’s face it- It’s not possible and especially in Los Angeles.
dineLa allows you to choose from some of LA’s newest and most extravagant restaurants on the scene and eat a three course menu between $26-$44 bucks! Oy Vey. This is a food lovers dream. If you have never been to Asia De Cuba, you have to go. They’re on the list and it is by far one of LA’s nicest and coolest restaurant spots. Totally my favorite place. It’s a great date place or even a great spot to start out and get drinks (Skybar). Highly recommended!
I am excited for Friday when I will get to try a new restaurant. I will let you know how that one goes.
To get some tips on how to make the best choices for dineLa check out this site. I think they’re pretty useful tips:
